14. Oscar Grant

Johannes Mehserle and another B.A.R.T. officer restrained Oscar Grant in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009 following an altercation that had taken place on the Furitvale Station platform. Grant was laying face down on the platform and resisting arrest. Mehserle then stood up and said to the other officer, “get back, I’m going to tase him,” but instead grabbed his pistol and shot Grant once in the back.

The incident was filmed on digital cameras and cell phones.

On November 5, 2010, Mehserle was to sentenced to two years minus time served for involuntary manslaughter. He’s been out of prison since May 3, 2011. A civil rights lawsuit is still pending.
