93-year-old Pearlie Golden — affectionately called “Ms. Sully” by those in her neighborhood — became upset with her great-nephew Roy Jones because she couldn’t get her driver’s licence renewed. Jones called 9-1-1 in hopes of diffusing the situation after Golden grabbed her late-husband’s gun. When “Ms. Sully” refused to put the gun down after police demanded, officer Stephen Stem opened fire — hitting her with five shots. Pearlie Golden was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died shortly after arrival.
Officer Stem was fired by the Hearne Police Department, then hired a lawyer to argue in court against what he called “unjust termination.” Of course, let’s not forget Stem’s history as a law enforcement officer. Officer Stem was also involved in the December 2012 shooting of Tederalle Satchell.
